Between abstraction and enhancement [Espaces Contemporains]

Between abstraction and enhancement [Espaces Contemporains]
02 May 2022

In Geneva, the renovation of the emblematic Conservatory of Music highlights the heritage value of the building while adapting it to the current era. A complex project that brings together the different themes of the transformation. With the aim of restoring a global coherence to the building, the project developed by the office GM Architectes Associés (GMAA) relies on the history of the building, is inspired by it to recover the original qualities and sometimes detaches itself from it. The transformation project aims to extend the building, renovate it for energy purposes and bring it up to standard (fire, security, access for people with reduced mobility). A technical, conceptual and historical challenge.

Clair-Vivre Foundation makes a new start [Tribune de Genève]
23 May 2022

In 2011, the heating system broke down, the house was in bad shape and everything had to be redone. Called to help, some elected officials of Jussy, including former mayor Josef Meyer, join the association. "We could have sold," recalls Philippe Othenin-Girard, "but the place would have been lost to everyone, so we looked for another solution." Architectural competition What to do with the premises? The foundation first made sure that their purposes still corresponded to a need. An architectural competition was then launched, won by the firm GM Architectes Associés, and then it was necessary to find 3.5 million and carry it out.

Fully renovated, the House of Rousseau and Literature reopens after two years of work.

Inescapable spot of Geneva's cultural life, limited by its aging condition, the renovation of the MRL was awarded to GMAA after an architectural competition in 2010. Throughout its 700 m², the renovated MRL is proud-looking. «Before, it didn't have a real coherence, so we tried to restore the house's original typology. One of the project's strong ideas was to give this new MRL the soul of a real house», says Tiziano Borghini. The birthplace of Jean-Jacques Rousseau really looks as new.

"Destination Switzerland"
02 July 2020

January 2018, twenty architects from Geneva based architecture firm GMAA are stuck in Zermatt due to a blizzard in the pension recently acquired by engineer Gaston Krüger. Result? They imagine its renovation. From the dormitories to the penthouse, the hotel, whose first guests arrived this past ski season, offers an authentic accomodation that favored local firms and materials. The architects' tailored interior design was built by Valaisan cabinetmaker Nicolas Devantéry and completed by Swiss manufacturers Röthlisberger, Horgenglarus, Laufen, as well as neighbor Romand brands like Søren Henrichsen or Chic Cham Rugs. In the penthouses, iconic TOGO by Ligne Roset offers relaxation areas with a view of the Matterhorn, while common areas are adapted to teleworking, yoga or sharing bio snacks.
